Hey, Stacy. I agree with you on the calcium sand. Even HCO recommends just plain play sand and Eco Earth, no Instant Ocean added to it. They believe it will burn molters. So they tell you not to use the HCP's pre-mixed sub due to the Instant Ocean added.
The HCO also recommends deeper pools too as well as tanks 29 Gallons or bigger. They also believe tanks 10 to 20 Gallons are too small to house crabs long term and are better for isolation tanks.

Apparently the people at HCO think my tank is too small for their taste and they're suggesting that I upgrade to a 29 gallon. I keep telling them I can't because I do not have a lot of money, I don't drive and I don't use credit or debit cards. Because my parents don't think it's safe. Plus, I'm about to have some surgery done so I wouldn't be able to lift a tank that size.
Actually there is a member of the HCO group who did feel she was being bullied into mixing the sub the way everyone else does it. She felt that after she posted a pic of her tank and it was all EE, the admin told her it was supposed to have sand mixed in. They would have done the same thing to me if I had changed my sub to all EE.
On the HCO FB page, I'm thinking I may want to be careful about what I say in that group when I talk of adding one or two more crabs. Although the Hermit Crab Association says for a 20 gallon tank, it's 5.5 gallons per crab.
Hooray, that means I'll be receiving my final order from her store and I am looking at ordering stuff from Hermie's Kitchen from now on. I ordered some more ocean salt and some grasshoppers from her store. I've been in desperate need of instant ocean sea salt for some time. All I can offer my crabs right now is fresh water.
I told the people in HCO my tank has enough room for two, maybe three more crabs and the owner said "We recommend ten gallons per crab and over crowding your tank can lead to some serious issues". Then I replied and said," Maybe it has room for one more?" And the owner replied," I wouldn't get one more unless you're planning an upgrade." There was a comment from one of the members that they felt like they were being bullied into doing it the way everyone else does it. So I will tread lightly on what I say on that group until I get a feel for what they're like.
Yes, I have a glass 20 gallon tank. There are no cracks but my mom and I put a pillowcase underneath after I kept having to sweep up sand off the table and off the floor, which is a laminate wood floor.
Hey, would it be acceptable if I put EE on the bottom of the tank and sand on top? My tank sits on a wooden desk and there is a concern that the sand will work its way through the bottom of the tank and ruin the wood. I've had to slip a pillow case underneath the tank to protect the wood. I would prefer all EE but most crabbers advise against that.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
