Ive been reading a question asked me by email about crabs moving shells, more then one at a time or just moving them without what looks like an intention to wear them. Yes ive seen this too. I have seen crabs put shells over the hold of a burrow. I have also seen them hold on to a shell that they have changed out of in case of "buyers remourse?" Often they will put back on the shell they start with so i guess untill they check to see how the new shell rides they want to keep track of the old one. If you have Indos or get the chance to ever get them, they are amazing shell changers. Everytime i put fresh clean shells into the tank i see indos changing. sometimes changing back into the first shell but I always get a fashion show. In the wild it rare to find the perfect shell. Its often rare to find one with out holes so the crabs are always on the look out for the next best or better shell. Now at one point for decoration i had a glass diamond nicknack type item. One of my crabs carried it around for 3 days! It didnt have any kind of hole but the crab turned it over and over as to look for the hole. I guess the smothness of the glass mande him like the feel. He would guard that diamond and push away crabs that got near it. It was very cute to watch it makes me wonder about the glass shells that at least one person is making for hermit crabs. Ill see if i can find some photos of those to show. www.wallout.com/node/106 ahh found a good one. I know that some of my little crabs have a favorite larger crab to hang out with so i know that they make close friends. I have a straw and a little compressus that are always together. In my photos there is one of them both in the barbie tub. even with shell changes the two of them can always be found close. At first i thought it might be that the E liked the bumpy shell of the straw but when she changed they still hang together. Not both have changed and they are still a couple.
