DEFINITELY worm castings. They are a HUGE fave for my crabs no matter what. Now, I do admit that I never go anywhere (except when I had my youngest a year ago & Hubby had to watch the tank,hh), but I always keep worm castings, mineral powder (both from HCP) and crushed oyster (mixed together) in the tank as well as various chunks of coral & bits of shell, etc, they can nibble.
Now, that being said....I am also a bit lazy sometimes & busy other times (I have 3 kids,hh), so I am big on having low-maintenance stuff in the tanks. It all depends on what you wanna deal with when you get back, really. You can take a huge cooked bone of some sort of meat & plop that in there. It may have some mold on it by the time you get back, but they will munch the heck out of it until about that last day when you get back. Nuts are good protein that lasts a couple days, egg shells too, dried leaves/flowers, etc. Honestly, if you just sprinkled the worm castings, crushed oyster & mineral powder on your sub that would not just meet all their nutritional needs, but keep them happy. How are you gonna make sure your pools are good?
≈19 clypeatus, 4 perlatus & 8 compressus in 4 tanks
I've been "conditioning" (for lack of a better word) the fish to where they eat every 3 or 4 days and once I get back I'll "condition" them back to every other day.
I've been monitoring the water parameters if I leave it be and let it evaporate over a 4 day time period and nothing seems to be too far out of whack and so far it hasn't bothered the fish or the corals. So, I think the pools will be fine.
I guess that's the good thing about having a newer reef - still time to condition everything where as with an old established tank, it knows what it wants and goes all wonky if anything changes.
The dogs are staying with my grandpa and the turtles will be just fine going a few days without food.
I think at this point, all that's left is to decide what to do with all my lights (will probably leave them all on) and deciding what exactly to leave the crabs to munch on. I'll pick up some worm castings (though, I don't know where to get them?).
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
