For my night viewing of my crabs, I use a blacklight, energy saver bulb (Lowes, approx $5) in a clamp lamp like the kind you would use in your garage. The light is clamped to the front of the tank, in the middle. I use two old house windows as a lid so I can easily slide them open or closed, accordingly. The light clamp fits perfectly between the windows allowing a very small gap if I push them together all the way.
On the front of my tank, I have some coconut fiber held up by suction cup. ButterCup has taken to scaling it since I put it up. The other night, my husband saw her all the way at the top of the tank; just below the lid. Just as he was about to go to bed...he noticed she was hanging from the rubber grip of the clamp lamp, just dangling! He thought she was trying to escape but she would have had to leave her shell behind to do it, the gap is that small and I don't think she would do that. Anyway, he couldn't go to bed until she had safely moved back to the fiber as he was afraid she would fall into the glass salt water dish below and crack her shell! I'm not sure which of them was the funnier in that situation, but thought I'd share it anyway! I have also since switched to a plastic dish in that spot, both to help if one of the crabbies should fall and to allay my husband's fears!
