Okay...so due to circumstances mostly out of my control, I will be moving at the end of this month/beginning of next month. What is the best way to move the crabs? Should I try to move them in the whole tank just with the water dishes out (they are still in the 20 gal, so it isn't TOO heavy) or should I take the crabs out and move them in something? Hopefully (for reasons not just having to do with the crabs), it will be a very short-distance move, but I will likely have to make the crabs the last thing moved so they aren't left long wherever I am not.

I have moved crabs only from room to room only ....Here's my say on it. If you move them in the tank use plywood under the tank when lifting so not to crack or stress the bottom. If that is too hard I would make an ISO tank using a plastic bin that they will be comfortable in. If you do move them last I would try not to move them from room to after there car ride. This will help with less stress. I also think it easier on them to move them during less activity time to prevent falls. I would also remove the water bowls during the process. Hope everything works out please keep us updated.

Well, I have moved this tank short distances (room to room) by myself before, so I think hubby ought to be able to do it if necessary, but we will definitely use that shelf piece it sits on to support the bottom. You are probably right about moving them straight to whatever room they are going too; I might not have thought of that. As for doing it during less activity..... I never see my crabs anymore, so that shouldn't be a problem,hh.

Hmmmmmm, not to steal the thread, but since my mother is ill we may be having to move somewhere (wherever we can afford) and I have that 55 gal tank with 250lbs of sand in it..... I would try to move them as they come up to something else and then take stuff out and move the tank but if it was a sudden move.... how on earth would one go about moving that thing? O__O

I moved crabs 30 mins away in a 10 G...There was 3 crabs at the time and 1 was molting...I took everything out except for a cocohut for them to hide in on the trip and I covered the tank with a towel for darkness (it wasn't a hot day)...Everyone did FINE and the molter came up 2 days after...I was using 5-6" of playsand...I hpoe this makes you feel a little more confident in moving your crabbies!
I would go to lows or home depot and get a brick of Sphagnum Moss and soak it in water. Take out any big decorations and put them in a box. Put the moss in a bag and right before you move the crabs put the moss in the tank for humidity and to keep the smaller items in place. After you can dryout the moss and keep it in a bag to use through out the year. It will stop any crabs from being shuffeled around in the tank.. I would duck tap the lid down. Mark the tank what room it goes into and against what wall. Try to have the stand ready and waiting for the tank. Taking out the big things will lighten it up a bit and they wont hit and break the glass. You may want to wrap the outside of the tank with cardboard so it doesnt get hit with anything that might crack the glass. Using a board under it is going to be a must. A cart with wheels would be ideal. Do you know anyone that works in a resturant that has a wheeled cart you can borrow? Some moving companies have one to rent. Best of luck.. Let us know how it goes and what worked for you so we have future reference..
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
