HOW MANY CRABS DO YOU HAVE,WHAT SIZES ARE THEY & HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THEM?-We have 2; one is small like a grape and the other is medium like a ping-pong ball
WHAT SPECIES OF CRABS DO YOU HAVE-purple pinchers
TANK # AND SIZE(S))- 1 tank less than 10 gallon (not sure size)
LID TYPE- screen hood
SUBSTRATE USED-sand and coconut fiber mix
SUBSTRATE DEPTH-1/2" in shallow end - 5" in deep end for molting area
HUMIDITY SOURCE- mist daily with spray bottle plus regularly mix water into soil to wet (when hermies are not molting and can come out to play while I clean their home)
HEAT SOURCE- under tank heater on deep end side (so they have access to a cool area and a warm area)
WHAT IS YOUR TEMP/HUMIDITY ON AVERAGE?- 73 degrees on average / I have no gauge yet for monitoring humidity
WHAT TYPE OF GAUGE DO YOU USE its a sticker from ZooMed
Where in the tank is the gauge located? top middle back wall inside tank
HOW DO YOU TREAT YOUR WATER?-well water from the tap conditioned with ZooMed conditioner
HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SALT WATER?- same as above. OR we also sometimes buy the prebottled salt water from PetCo because the ZooMed conditioners are hard to find in my area
HOW BIG/DEEP ARE YOUR POOLS? 1/2"
WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR CRABS?- ZooMed Hermit Cab Food, coconut treat, vitamin block
WHAT TYPES OF HIDES/CLIMBS DO YOU HAVE?-Home made 'barn' from popcicle sticks for hiding (so wooden); We have a climbing stick that was purchased from the pet store but they don't seem to ever use it
DO YOU HAVE AN ISOLATION TANK?- No
HOW MANY EXTRA SHELLS AND WHAT SIZES DO YOU HAVE?- 3 of different shapes and sizes
DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM & ANY OTHER INFO YOU THINK APPLIES- Our bigger crab, named Big Guy, is molting. We knew it was time and were not surprised when he dug his little cave a little over a week ago and disappeared. All was well. We were patiently waiting for our friend to return and knowing not to disturb him. We learned a lot when the other one, named Little Guy, molted successfully about 2 months ago. We almost interfered too much then but learned a lot and were well prepared this time.
Little Guy has been very lonely since Big Guy went to molt.
Unfortunately, I woke this morning to find that Little Guy seems to have become impatient and decided to tunnel to where Big Guy is molting. I am freaking out. Big Guy is no longer all in the dark because the tunnel to the cave exposes him to light. And I am worried about cannibalism. If I interfere and pull Little Guy out, then I will risk collapsing the cave. Its too soon for Big Guy to be done molting. Do I just leave them be and hope for the best??? Will Little Guy kill Gig Guy? Will the interference mid-molt kill Big Guy?
These are my 8-year old's pets and she will be so upset if she loses Big Guy; he was her first crab and she takes such good care of him. Help.
