My heat is too low in the 90 and I'd like some input on what to do. Since I've only ever had smaller tanks I don't quite know what would be best. Here's what I have in there currently:
- 6" x 47" Ultratherm across the back, half above and half below the substrate
- 2 heat bilights on the left side (to keep the right clear once my hinged lid is here). Each has a 40 watt day and a 40 watt night bulb - one on at a time in each light - and I have them set up so that there is always one bulb on that is on the left (which is far left side of the tank) and one on the right (which makes it about tank center).
Current temp is 75 on the left side (where I have the heat lamps) and 72 on the right. I have polystyrene on the back, both sides, under the tank, and on the top on the right side that doesn't have the lights.
I have an 11" x 17" Ultratherm on my 30, if only all three crabs would show up on the surface so I can move them. Moose, the large that was digging around, has gone back to hanging out in her cocohut on the shelf so the immediate need to get her out of there before a molt may be less of an issue.
Will an Ultratherm on one end have any effect all the way across a 90 gallon? If not, I proably need one on both ends. Hubby has just said "get whatever you need", so I need to figure out what I need. hh What would be best? Here are the thoughts I'm having:
- Put an 11"x17" Ultratherm on the right end only. Would that heat across the 90 gallon?
- Put an 11"x17" Ultratherm on both ends, mounted with the 11" from top to bottom, with half above and half below the substrate level.
- Put an 11"x23" Ultratherm on the right end where the temp is lower. That would have to be mounted with the 23" going up and down, which means that 9" of the UTH would be below the substrate. Is that too much? They mention on the site the risk of the heater failing if it has too much substrate and can't disperse the heat. Then use the 11"x17" that I have on the left end if I need it.
I'm thinking I need to order 1 Ultratherm - question is which size?
