I thougth i had mentioned this here before but after reading through a few new posts i see it needs a thread of its own.
Ive been doing some research and recently ive had some others share their research with me that is in greater detail then i have the ability to do. When i see anything that comes up that is the same among different countries that also matches what i have i find a need to share it with the hobbyist in the hope of saving some pets. The paper work i have may say Necropsy showed honey or nut butter on Maxillipeds, or mouth grooming appendages, periopods, gills, brachial chamber, Abdomen, or modified gills even. It usually also mentions food particals and substrate coir or sand also attached to the sticky substance. It mentions tissue missing, torn, or stuck together.
Honey doesnt need to be dry to be sticky
Many who have treated ill or hurt crabs have found them dead in the peanut butter or honey.
crabs crawing or walking through the honey or peanut butter can get the substance in the gills. Setae hairs on the crabs exo can help any substrate move accross and around the crab body.
I dont know why people recommend honey for ill crabs. I do not. Im thinking because its often recommended for humans i wouldnt use it as a food for hermits. Some have made powdered honey by mixing it with cuttle bone, or other powdered foods. That i believe is fine.
Water bowls are not always close to the food and some times the crabs have to go through substrate before they can get to water..In some cases its to late to get to the water before damage is done to the crab from the sand rubbing stuck in one place that normally they could brush it out of. The crabs that I speak of here were not sick crabs just crabs that died and the testing was done to find out the cause of death. Ive been lucky enough lately to be working with the top for most researchers of coenobita in the world as i come across anything like this that i feel is important to all crabbers it will be posted in Sach's pages and only in Sach's pages. The benefits do not out weigh the dangers in my opinion. you can get all the same benefits plus more with bee pollen. Crabs love it, its sweet and tasty to them, and it will not get stuck in the gills or small mouth parts. I feel the same way about peanut butter or other sticky foods. They can make sand stick in the gills too. i know other foods can be sticky but honey and peanut butter are about the most sticky and think. Natural bees wax is also good for them and they also love that. They love all bee products. Id rather give them fresh raw nuts then the nut butters. Ive seen someone lose a very close crab due to honey and it made me reconsider all sticky foods. its not just one friend.. its many people in not just my research but a group of researches works that i have read through im not talking 10 crabs im talking many many more.
Here is some great info on bee pollen - www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/beepollen.php

Of course raw nuts will replace any nut butters even crushed or finely chopped they are not sticky like nut butter.
Im making sure nuts and bee pollen are always listed at cost in my shop for all of you. blessings, Suebee
