I bought a set of callipers today and measured my shells. The one Wicker had been in for months came out at 1.2cm. She is now in a bigger one. Most of the shells I have found at the beach have been between 2 and 3cm. Now I need to find some bigger ones than that because Ginger is already in a 3cm shell.
c. variabilis x4: Ginger, Mango, Fudge and Caramel Ginger has been with me since November 2011. Mango, since August 2013 Fudge and Caramel were adopted in about November 2015 from a local crabber along with Ziggy who was the mother of my first lot of babies but died about a week later. + about a 13 baby crabs as at 26 Dec 2016 (DOH 4th December)
Ok, well we have a finicky crabbie that will not choose a new shell, and we think that is why he's not molting. My son and I saw a post somewhere that shows how to measure for shell size while a crabbie's in it's shell, but we cannot find it now that we have a caliper.... Sach, do you know of this technique, and have a link we could use to see how it's done?
Can't say I really worried about shell measuring...I took a rough guess as to BB's size and bought shells of roughly the same size. Nat had sent me some slightly odd sized and shaped shells with my last order, I shoved them in too, the white speckled shell is beautiful. Took my biggest crab about 1/2 an hour to size up my gorgeous shell as somewhere to make a home in! He wasn't in the shell all that long, but he obviously wasn't afraid to try new shells! I've gotten some smaller shells and a few odd shaped shells for Pinky too, he hasn't swapped shells yet. As long as there are plenty of choices to prevent shell fights, don't worry about it!
4/1 - Stained crab is a boy! 1/5 - Got a 'sick crab' pack from Nat. I'm very impressed, it's a large pack so will feed all crabs! 30/6 - My new hygros have arrived! The big tank is 29degrees/81humidity. The little tank has the same temperature but 86humidity.

While guessing can work crablet, for some crabs/species not having that shell that is just the right size will prevent them from changing so it's important to know you have some that are the right sizes. I've been at this long enough that I can usually eyeball a crab and be pretty close on what size they need but that took years of experience with measuring shells.
≈19 clypeatus, 4 perlatus & 8 compressus in 4 tanks
I have the same problems with knowing which shells are the right size. I bought some shells from the hermit crab patch and neither of my crabs have accepted them. I'm thinking they're either too big or my crabs just don't like them.

kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
