I've read that some crabbers use reef sand in their tanks, so I'm wondering... would it be okay to use that even though it's not ideal? I can't just go out and get play sand because I do not drive and I rely on online ordering. I already have a mix of play sand, 1 brick of EE, and a bag of the HCP's substrate mix, I just want to add another layer.

I don't see why not... The problem is that most reef sands out there actually contain a lot of microfauna that will quickly die and pollute the sand in a couple of hours after being emersed. This means that soon you will have particularly nasty sand which might not be beneficial to the crabs. If you really want to use this sand I would suggest washing it letting it dry out in the sun - all the way through.. this means a thin layer for it to dry properly - and then place it in the tank. As time consuming as this may sound; a freshwater soak and "wash away" or even "kill" a lot of the fauna and if not; the sun UV rays will! lol Maybe it's best to wash it one more time after the drying process to be sure. The good thing about these types of sands is that they have a uniform grade - which would allow some airflow through the substrate; which might have unexpected benefits for a digging/moulting crabs! Not to mention a lot of these sands have be worn by the wave action; so at lease it would be smooth!
