So I have 3 HUGE pine/evergreen trees in my backyard. Which means I also have TONS of pinecones. Now I know C Clypeatus love pinecones, but I've never given it to them.
Can i just take it right from our yard and put it in the tank, or do I wash them first? What do I wash them with? I know with wood you're supposed to bake them in the oven first ... how long do I bake for and at what temp? Do I bake the pinecones as well? Do I have to let them dry first or just put them in wet?
I ask this, because a few times I've put wet wood in the oven, and have caused a fire, and an explosion. This was a very messy explosion as the lighbulb in the oven also exploded and there was glass everywhere. This is why I haven't tried taking anything from my backyard and putting in the tank again. I seem to be a magnet for disasters. The drift wood I do have in my tank, my mom brought it down from their place, and she'd already washed and baked ... so I didn't need to do that, thank goodness!!

I have put pinecones in just as they are. Once, they did have teeny little white bugs, but the crabs ate them
I wouldn't recommend baking pine cones simply because of the sap; they could catch fire. The wood, you do a nice long soak in salt water, vinegar water or one of each. Then you turn your oven down as low as it goes, put the wood on a cookie sheet or pizza pan and bake until you can smell the wood. The only reason you have to do this is it helps prevent mold. Most of my wood has gone in as-is, but softer woods can get moldy. You can even do the soak & then let them dry in the sun too.

thanks so much Sach-Crabministrator i hadn't turned the oven down all the way ... i just turned it on, and stuck them in. OK maybe i'll just wash the the pinecones with fresh water, and then put them in. are closed ones ok too, or do they prefer the open pinecones?
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
