If you have a reasonably active or friendly crab, there is a really easy way to tell if they are male or female.
Girl crabs have little genital holes called gonopores on the back pair of walking legs (close to the shell). The boys don't have them as that is where they deposit their spermataphore during mating.
Now, this may sound all scientific and confusing, but actually it's very simple.
If you have an active crab that likes to come way out of it's shell when you pick it up, (or stretch up the glass of your tank) take a look at their underside. If you look close to where their body is going into the shell and you can see two symmetrical dots...you have a girl.
If they are absent, it's a boy. It's as simple as that.
yea,ive been watching ladybug is a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,wont have to change her name now,she was one of the found molters, and the small molter i knew about is actually a compressus in the turbo shell mom named her millie

All of mine other than some of the newbies are comfortable enough that they will stretch out enough for me to see their genopores or lack there of. I have plenty of good pictures in my one journal post.

I know my Hermit crab Moon Pie (RIP) was a male because I looked after he died I know my Hermit crabs Tater Tot and Snow Cone are female. When Tater Tot was changing into different shells I seen she was holding a bunch of eggs! And I held Snow Cone an inch away from the Cholla log in the pet store and when she reached out to grab the log I checked and seen she was a female. I haven't checked the rest of my crabbies yet because they are new and I don't want to bother them too much yet.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
