Congrats all you guys But unfortunately, I have had 2 deaths in the process...
I think we have all been there! I still have most of my first 5 except for Ironman, he was a sweetie, but did a surface molt and when he died I found out why, the shell he was in was sharp and he was caught in it ): I also lost around 4 E's that I rescued, but they never made it through their first molt and were in bad shape when I got them. All we can do is try to make their life better and enjoy them while we have them.

Congrats aussieJJdude!! In September it will be 4 years of crabbing for me. I still have 1 of my original 2 ... the other one unfortunately died while trying to molt as I knew NOTHING about hermit crabs and kept digging him up
Herb, the one I still have, is one strong crabbie as he ended up having a surface molt in the corner which I ALSO disturbed him during. I thought he was dead and started freaking out. That's when I first went searching for help on the internet and found the land hermit crabs forum. They saved Herb, literally. And since then I have had much more luck!!!
After Cuba died ... I got three more, and I still have 1 of those: Sass (ecuadorian). Sass and Herb are unseperatable (best buds forever). Which is why at the moment Sass is the only E in a tank full of Purple Pinchers hehe.
And as of right now, I still have 4 from our first year: Herb, Sass, Flash, and Monster.
Unfortunately with hermit crabs, deaths are inevitable. And me being such an emotional person, gets my heart broken each and every time. I'm just so glad I found Sach's Crab Page as even with all my successes, I have been doing A LOT of things wrong all these years.
I have heard of crabs going missing & turning up years later when the people were cleaning out the house to move. One of my PPs did that when we first moved into this house & we had literally nothing. We had no furniture & yet it still took about 2 weeks for him to turn up. I can't imagine all the hiding places she could find in a big house. You never know......
I had 2 escapes, and neither ended well. I found a tank on my doorstep one morning, and brought it inside. There were three hermit crabs inside. The tank was FREEZING (november in canada). I was digging around in the terrain trying to move everyone to ISO and left the lid open to the ISO while I was doing this. One of the 3 crabs escaped. I didn't even know. Found him about a week later, all dried up behind our couch.
The other one was my Strawberry crab Chance ... who was also a rescue but I'd had him for 2 years. I left the tank open while feeding and didn't realize he'd slipped out. When i realized he was missing i thought he'd just gone under ground. When I cleaned the tank out 6 months later I couldn't find a trace, not even his shell. Found my cat playing with the shell on the ground one day ... crab was not inside. I'm sure I"ll find a dried up crabby one day. I definitely learned my lesson ... ALWAYS close the lid/door.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
