While looking up some other info, I came across a site for the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (I think that's what it's called.). Anyway, I could find nothing on their site about hermit crabs! So, I wrote them a letter
Hi! I apologize if I'm mentioning this in the wrong place. I am wondering why there is no mention I found on your site (or in your classes of wildlife) of any coenobita or "land hermit crabs". To my knowledge there are at least 2 species (c. clypeatus & c. compressus) that can be found indigenously on Florida coasts.
I'm sure you have the interests of all Florida wildlife in mind, so why leave them out? Not only are they found there, but also in danger of lack of shells, garbage on the beaches harming them & beach vendors selling them publicly without the proper info on how to care for them. This puts animals with decades of life & breeding ahead of them in the wild, in jeopardy of dying in a metal cage within months.
I hope this was merely an oversight & you will correct it. Thank you in advance.
