Temperature/Humidity
Purpureus tend to enjoy themselves the most when their environment has a temperature around 85 degrees Farenheit/29.44C and a humidity around 85%.
Substrate
A mixture of clean playsand and Eco Earth (Coco Fiber) is enjoyed by the purpureus.
Be sure to moisten your substrate to a sand castle consistency. You should be able to make a hole with your finger and have the hole stay intact once you remove said finger.
Shells
Shells that have a D shaped opened are often favored by purpureus, though they have been known to take turbos as they get bigger.
Food
It's important to feed your land hermit crabs a wide variety of fresh and organic foods. Foods like blueberries, worm castings, eggplant and coconut, will help bring out your purpureus' lovely colors.
Water
Each purpureus should be able to dip their shell opening into a pool of dechlorinated fresh water and salt water.
Other Favorites
Coenobita purpureus are reported to be very calm & docile. Crabbers say they are either very shy or very friendly. They love to climb, so give them plenty of ways to exercise, but don't be surprised if they stay buried a lot of the time.
Combining with other species
C. purpureus should NEVER be kept with any other species since they often seem too "nice" to fight back aggressors.
You should never have just one of a species, get Crabby a species-buddy!
