This is Jaime, Leah's Mom. Last night Fish, my son's hermit crab changed shells. Leah was very excited to show me, and when she picked up the new shell with Fish inside, he Flopped out and started running around her dresser naked! We got him back into the tank, but he completely refused to reenter any shell. I watched him for hours, and stayed up spraying his naked little butt so he wouldn't suffocate or die, and finally when I found him to be enjoying his time being free, I went to bed around 3 am. I was watching him, and he actually waved at me! This morning when we got up, Fish was still alive, and still shell-less. I took him out and put him in a shallow bath of luke warm water, and washed out his old shell, and a new shell, and put him into a small container with the 2 shell choices. After 2 hours, and no where else to go, he FINALLY reentered his old shell! He slept for hours today after all that excitement last night, and to my dismay, when I just checked on him, he is actually perched on top of the log, NAKED again! WHY does he keep leaving his shell??? I am beginning to think that last night was no accident. I think Fish is enjoying living without a shell. The other 3 Hermit Crabs are acting normal. I've bonded with Fish before in the middle of the night. I got to watch him eat his exo after a molt. I really like this guy, and I hope he's OK! I don't know if I can sit 4 hours again in the middle of the night spraying him so he doesn't dry out, or moving the other crabs away from him. Last night I caught him hiding behind his old shell trembling with fear as Leah's bully crab Sunny towered over him! Now what? He's on the loose again!
I have some GREAT pictures, if I can figure out how to post them, I will!
