Everything tells me to just "walk away", but I guess I'm looking for another opinion. I've been looking for Es, but haven't seen any near home. I'm 400 miles from home (Ohio) in Pennsylvania - point is it's cold - and I went to a pet store yesterday with my mom and found what I think are Compressus in their local pet store. They looked fairly healthy, but were not in great conditions. I didn't see any gauges or heat, there was a lid on the tank, but it had vents, they were on what looked like EE, had food, and had a water dish, but it was empty. So given the conditions it's possible that they could suffer from various causes of PPS. I'm not certain they were Es, but I'm pretty sure they were Es or Ruggies. First question - how can I tell the difference?
Right now I have 2 tanks at home - a 10 gal. with 4 crabs (probably too full to add a couple more) and a 30 gal. tall with 3 crabs (and that tank was adopted and I suspect the substrate has not been changed in 3 years based on what I recently figured out). I'm planning to set up my 90 this weekend and move crabs in New Year's weekend. So, I don't have a great place at home right now, but would in a week.
To get them I would have to buy minimal supplies to get them home - a container, sand (which I'm going to need for the 90 when I get back so not a big deal), something to use for dishes and a hiding place. I'd also need a way to keep them warm, both at my mom's and on the drive home.
What would you do? I hate to leave them because they look pretty healthy, but aren't in great conditions, but getting them and traveling with them in the winter isn't great either. I can afford to buy Es through LHC in the spring so I know I can get some eventually. Tomorrow is the last day I'm here so I need to make a decision quickly. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
