Ok seaweed question....My Mom and Dad have a house on a lake in Indiana and they want to bring seaweed home for the crabs. The seaweed wold come from a fresh water lake(s). They are on a chain of lakes (7 in all). Would this be safe? If so..How should I prepare it? I am not a seaweed type of person but I will prepare anything for my crabs. ;D Also how should I prepare maple or oak leaves?

I'm sure Mel & Sue will (hopefully ) weigh in on this one, but I don't know that I would trust anything from any body of water in the US these days, personally. Too much garbage and pollution, not to mention mercury poisoning. I kinda hope I'm wrong on this one though...good luck,hh!

Id say dry it out totaly to make sure not bugs are alive in it, you can give it a soak in salt water first then hang it on hangers or in paper bags hooked to hangers. If its a lake that is safe to eat the fish in and swim in Id go ahead and give it a try. Seaweed is so full of nutrients and good for them. Even fresh water seaweed. You may want to look up the local invasive plant listing to make sure its not a invasive seaweed that they have fines for harvesting. If your moving it from one place to another there could be fines. If your parents dry it out for you that would be even better. Shipping and traveling with dry seaweed is ok. Let us know how you make out with it.
The lakes are safe to swim and eat the fish! My parents are allowed to remove seaweed by their piers if it gets out of control. I will be going there at the end of the month. I plan on drying it there and bringing it back. I will do some local research first before feeding my crabs. Thanks everyone for the help!
