my thoughts on sponges: I have used natural sponges through out my tanks for 15 years without any bacteria problems ever. I never ever microwave or boil them. I wet them and let them naturally dry and i re wet them. from time to time when i clean the tank I will give them a vinegar and water rinse with the other dishes and items in the tank. I have many of them in the tanks to help with humidity as well as for the hermits to munch one and play with. They also will hide under them. They dry pretty fast only a few hours and they dry. I have seen people on ebay selling sponges that were not natural sponges and i would say that people should never use them because the crabs do eat the sponges. I do not put sponges in my water dishes however once in a while i will find that one did get into the dish. I also know that ELHC and HCP use sponges.. I dont know where the idea that bacteria in the natural sponges will kill the crabs came from, my guess would be the idea that kitchen sponges harbor so much bacteria? Blessings, Suebee

Thanks for this Sue!
Here's my questions: if you don't put it in the water dishes (where I guess they could get bacteria cuz the water can get yucky), where do you put them and if they dry fast, do you have to re-wet them frequently?
≈19 clypeatus, 4 perlatus & 8 compressus in 4 tanks
I put them through out the tank on the sand on the hut in the tree any where, yes they dry out fast and daily when i change the water i re wet the sponges.. I dont think its that much of a problem putting them in the water dish if you change the water daily. Just rinse them under some clean water giving them a good squeeze and clean the bowl well. Crabs do need to be able to get water in and out of the shell to flush out the shells so if a sponge is in the way they might not be able to do that. If your dish is to deep get a smaller one. You can put in a stone, shell or plastic plant to help little guys get out of a dish too.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
