HOW MANY CRABS DO YOU HAVE,WHAT SIZES ARE THEY & HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THEM?-(I always say name something they are the size of like a grape, ping-pong ball, etc.) I have 3 crabs. All 3 are different sizes. The smallest one is the size of a walnut. Next one is the size of a ping pong ball. The biggest one is the size of a golf ball. The 2 smallest ones were given to me about a month ago and I bought the largest one at a pet store about 2 weeks ago. The 2 smallest ones came from Florida. My friend got them while on vacation there.
WHAT SPECIES OF CRABS DO YOU HAVE-(Self-explanatory) All 3 are Purple Pinchers
TANK # AND SIZE(S))- (ie: I have 2 tanks, 75 gallon & 55 gallon) I have 1 tank and it's 20 Gallons. Glass aquarium
LID TYPE-(ie: Glass, aquarium hood, etc) It's the lid that came with the aquarium. Like the metal vented ones with the holes in it. I have 2 heat lamps sitting on top of the lid. 1 with a 60 watt light bulb in it that I keep on during the day and the other is a UV Light bulb that I turn on at night. Around the lamps the lid is covered with plastic wrap to keep heat in humidity in.
SUBSTRATE USED-(ie: I use playsand and Eco Earth in an approx 5:1 ratio) When I received the first 2 I used just the calci sand that is sold in the stores stating it is used for hermit crabs. When I bought the 3rd crab I bought the Eco Earth and made 1 brick by soaking it in purified water and then mixed it with the sand. But there is more EE than sand.
SUBSTRATE DEPTH- About 4 inches
HUMIDITY SOURCE-(ie: Do you use a humidifier, mist daily, etc) I spray tank once daily with purified water
HEAT SOURCE-(ie: Under tank heater, heat bulb) Where are they located? As stated above I have 2 heat lamps. One on during the day and the other at night.
WHAT IS YOUR TEMP/HUMIDITY ON AVERAGE?-(Please give averages for both day & night) During the day Temp is about 83 and Humidity about 80. At night for some reason the Temp goes to about 90 and the Humidity goes down to about 65 to 70. Not sure if it's because of the UV light bulb or what??
WHAT TYPE OF GAUGE DO YOU USE (analog or digital)? (ie; I use AcuRite digital gauges)
Where in the tank is the gauge located? (ie; 2-3" off the sub, centrally located) Analog and it's about 2 1/2 to 3 inches above substrate
HOW DO YOU TREAT YOUR WATER?-(ie: Tap water conditioner, name brand) I just buy gallon jugs of purified water from the grocery store for the fresh water and the salt water is called "Hydrate" Salt Water Solution for Hermit Crabs that I bought at Walmart
HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SALT WATER?-(ie: Do you use Oceanic or Instant Ocean-name the brand) I bought it Pre-Mixed
HOW BIG/DEEP ARE YOUR POOLS? I think about 2 inches wide and 1/2 inch deep
WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR CRABS?-(If you feed other than fresh food, what is it called & where do you get it?) So far I haven't fed them much of a variety because I'm totally new to this and still doing a lot of research. They have been offered store bought HC mix, Celery leaves, Dried whole Shrimp, Egg shells and apples
WHAT TYPES OF HIDES/CLIMBS DO YOU HAVE?-(ie: coco-hut, cholla wood, etc) 1 small Hermie Hut, 2 medium size pieces of cholla wood, Plastic palm trees, and Larger seashells
DO YOU HAVE AN ISOLATION TANK?- NO
HOW MANY EXTRA SHELLS AND WHAT SIZES DO YOU HAVE?-(Self-explanatory) There are 10 shells in the tank right now, I have small, medium, and Larger ones due to all 3 crabs being different sizes
DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM & ANY OTHER INFO YOU THINK APPLIES- The 2 crabs I received from my friend have always been fairly active. The smallest one is very, very active all the time and the medium sized one is not as active and kind of shy but comes out of his shell when I put him in the palm of my hand for a minute. The larger one that I bought from the pet store was very active when I handled him at the pet store and seemed like a good pick, even though the condition that he was living in at the pet store was sad and ridiculous and I wish I could rescue all of them
Anywho. As soon as I put him in the tank he was active and exploring for hours and seemed to be getting along with the other 2 crabs. He switched shells the night I bought him (and I'm glad he did because he was in a hideous painted shell that I have learned they are not supposed to be in). As soon as he switched shells he went into the hermie hut and stayed there until I took him out to inspect him last night fearing he was dead or dying. His head and front legs are out of the shell and when he retracts into the shell he does it very slowly and doesn't react to sudden movement like the other 2. They immediately retract into their shells when they sense danger. His color looks good and he doesn't have an odor at all and he even made some kind of slight squeak when I was examining him so I know he's alive. But he is very sluggish and isn't moving in the tank at all. I put him back in the tank about 3 hours ago and he's in the same spot and still has his head and front legs out. I also have not noticed his antenna moving at all either. As I said I'm new to owning hermit crabs and have no idea what is wrong with him. I don't want him to die!!
