Spraying for ants? Ask the landlords about it...can't they just do around windows and doors? Your tanks are covered right? The crabs shouldn't be able to breathe in much of it anyway. Leave the covers on the tank and leave a note on top for the guys who actually do the spraying.
4/1 - Stained crab is a boy! 1/5 - Got a 'sick crab' pack from Nat. I'm very impressed, it's a large pack so will feed all crabs! 30/6 - My new hygros have arrived! The big tank is 29degrees/81humidity. The little tank has the same temperature but 86humidity.
Yes, my tank is covered. I have a hinged lid from the HCP so there is some plastic wrap taped down on one side and an acrylic strip on the other side. The plastic wrap side has the lighting on top of it.
Hey! We just went through this here at our apartment. All the pest companies should use stuff that is safe for kids and pets these days so I just covered the top of my tank with 2 layers of Press n seal and put the lid back on over that and my crabbies were perfectly fine! I was still a little worried so I left a note on the front of the tank explaining that the crabs couldn't handle the spray so please use caution around the tank and they were very cautious to make sure they only used bait near my tank not spray. It's been a week and everyone is still alive and well!

Those are good suggestions. I would definitely leave them a not or be sure to be there when they are spraying. Also you can cover you tank in a blanket or big towel depending on tank size so that what they are spraying doesn't got on the tank and accidentally transferred into the tank if you want to be extra cautious. That way you can just remove it when they are done and throw it in the wash.

I know I'm late to the convo but let me tell you a story that I probably have in my journal here.
I lived in an apt in PA that was a 2 story house with each floor being a separate apartment with a common front porch. We were downstairs and believe me when I say the floor (our ceiling) was so thin you could not only hear & smell everything from upstairs but literally see through gaps in the PAINT that separated the wood from upstairs to down.
My upstairs neighbor was a very flamboyant early 20's girl who liked animal prints, big hair & earrings & high heels (great fun with that floor/ceiling) who also liked to constantly talk loudly to her phone on speaker. She was also SUPER gross in her habits & long story short she got the whole house infested with fleas.
After enough complaints about the fleas (because additionally the landlord wasn't cutting the grass) the landlord literally snuck up to her apartment, threw a bunch of bug bombs in her apartment & literally ran out the front door. Right as my husband saw him darting out the front door (in a hoodie) to his truck I was in the room with my then <6 month old and started feeling weird & disoriented.
When we started smelling something that clearly smelled like bug spray we put 2 & 2 together. I had my husband get all 3 kids outside ASAP because I had to get the tank (my then 55 with 8 of my original PPs). I took the lights off and put 3 garbage bags and as many blankets as I could find (I was really dizzy & disoriented) on top of the tank.
Me & the baby had to go to the ER but ended up okay. I left the covering on the tank for something for several hours after we got home to be sure all the fumes were out of the house. Of those 8 crabs they were all still definitely with me through being homeless shortly after this incident (mid Oct 2011) to setting up their new 55 in spring 2012 (they were moved to a 29 for the move & literally went with us to hotels, friends' houses, the car, etc). After that time I took in a bunch of adoptees and could only tell my 2 big boys (of the original group) for sure-Godzilla & Gamera thouh I suspect Foxy was actually Ghidora from the coloring. Godzilla is still with me now and I only lost Gamera in his most recent molt (within the last 6 months).
I've actually learned a lot about HC gills and they actually aren't as sensitive (as well as their bodies' reaction to) to the things that are usually really harmful to breathing animals. This is likely due to the fact that they have changed very little evolution-wise since developing in an oxygen-low environment so many million years ago.
