I am wondering how long does it sometimes take crabs to change shells? I bought 5 small crabs and none of them have changed shells yet? I have my one small crab, BEN, and he keeps looking at the same shell over and over again, but has yet moved into it. I think I read somewhere that a crab can be checking out a shell for a few times before finally moving into it? I hope he picks it, because it's a really pretty one I bought from the Hermit Crab patch. His old shell that he is in seems to fit him fine, but I was wonder how long it will take for him to switch? For any of them to switch over?
I also have my biggest crab Micky, who is in a nice green shell, brand new shell, but he picked a shell that does not fit him He is my biggest medium sized crab. And I feel bad because he doesn't have a proper size shell. I am going crazy trying to find a shell that he can fit into. I see him checking shells out, but he never changes. It's so stressful. I feel really bad he is in a shell that doesn't fit him. I bought him over 12 new shells, and he still hasn't switched over? I guess some crabs may never change shells, or be happy with the selection? I have so many shells, and spent so much on them, especially since I bought all my shells from the Hermit Crab patch, the border fees and exchange rate isn't cheap.
But I do have three of my medium crabs that have switched over to new shells and their shells fit them perfectly! That i am happy about.
Anyways, any suggestions on how to get crabs to change shells? Or how long it might take?
I have the same issue with not knowing which is a properly sized shell. Different crabs like different types of shells. Like mine, your crabs may not like those shells. Oh, and if the crab is repeatedly turning the shell over, it is inspecting it as a potential home. However, if the crab has walked away from it, it may have decided it didn't like that shell. My two PPs have yet to go shell shopping, but they haven't even though they both have recently molted. They're content with the ones they're wearing. Give them time. They'll do it when they're ready.

Think of it like shoes; the shell has to fit just right, be comfortable & look nice. Each crab has it's own idea of what is the perfect shell; all we can do is provide lots of choices. You can try boiling the shells in salt water (let dry & cool obviously); this makes them smell more appealing and also clack the shells around gently. The sound tells the crabs a shell is becoming available & it may entice them. Have you tried the SCP store for shells yet?
