There's 2 rows of measurements on the caliper. They are all in inches and the bottom row is measurements between the top measurements. You slide the caliper open and look at where the line rests;when you get to 1" on the top line you will see that on the bottom line it rests between 7/8" and 1 1/8". Look at measuring the widest part of the shell opening.
