Finally found a solution for my guys that I actually "catch" them eating. I took some extremely ripe blueberries, and processed them in a blender with honey (10-1) since my guys tend to like dipping in wet things. Hooray!! Plus it's antioxidants and color food (PS they have never touched a berry or piece of fruit/vegetable when I put it in whole. So now I may well puree everything. Hello, Magic Bullet)
Also they did eat some fresh hibiscus leaves judging by the neat triangular pincher marks along it.
Also on a side note; I had been bummed that I was caring for creatures that I literally never saw. So, it has been almost 5 months since I got them, and finally the e's at least are coming out a lot. When they see me they will recede into the shadows but come right back out. All of them are out and about enough now that I can at least tell who is down and who is not. So for anyone new, it seems it takes 5-6 months for them to get comfortable.
PS I have one crab who seems to be suddenly hitting the calcium pretty hard. I know they do that after they emerge, but do they also do this just BEFORE they go to molt?

That's great! Mine do better when I cut or "open" the berries for mine too. That's so cool that you saw the pincher marks on the hibiscus. You're lucky; some crabs take years to acclimate; I have crabs who have been with me 5 years & are STILL shy. Yes, calcium is important all the time but yeah some crabs load up BEFORE they go down as well as after.
≈19 clypeatus, 4 perlatus & 8 compressus in 4 tanks
Going backward, kitty the answer is never. You never want to dig up crabs if you don't have to firstly but as @nataddictedtohcs explained it to me digging to see if a crab has died disrupts the whole tank just for our peace of mind. If it's dead, it's dead; "knowing for sure" will make no difference other than stressing your others & disrupting the natural balance of the sub & their tunnels.
(On an aside, I sell both sea weed & bird seeds in my SCP Store )
The canned caviar & snails are totally fine they just go over faster than the crabs will eat them so you may wanna freeze after opening. * crablet caviar is fish eggs, not lobster
I imagine the lobster having eggs was just a bad luck of the draw for that lobster since they only spawn once a year and she must have been trapped at that time.
OK, what link can I use to find the seed and the sea weed ? I found several items for sale in the cafe press store but no food items. is there another link ?
So I made myself a salad for lunch today and on a whim I stuck the base of a romaine heart into the tank and that has turned out to be a super fun interactive treat! Since I put it in I have had a crab climbing on it and eating off it. Thats the first thing I have ever stuck in that they automatically went for. I'm trying to get a pic but they are being shy crabbies...everytime I get my camera I startle them lol.
Hermie mom to 2 PP's I got in July '14(Iggy & Sheldon, 1 that I got in September '14 (Penny Jr) and 2 E's I got in September '14(Nikki and Frankie)

That is great that you where able to see them eating, and you are lucky to see your crabs at least that much. Most of mine took longer than that to acclimated to me being moving around while they were out. I still have some tuck and rollers.

I don't know...BB and Ginger were happy enough to change shells in front of me a week after they got home. Meggs is happily munching on bark, I don't wanna disturb the muncher!
4/1 - Stained crab is a boy! 1/5 - Got a 'sick crab' pack from Nat. I'm very impressed, it's a large pack so will feed all crabs! 30/6 - My new hygros have arrived! The big tank is 29degrees/81humidity. The little tank has the same temperature but 86humidity.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
