Ok so I am going to ask some questions but first in advance I am not looking for posts like "put petroleum jelly around your tank." "Bake all your sub again" "peppermint oil" "clean up the food more often" etc. I have heard all of this. I have done all of this. I am not baking my sub every other day.
Now... My questions...
1. I feel like my isopods always end up dying out or get close to dying out. I don't have any isopods now. I have brought them in from my dad's yard and I have order 100+ at a time, but they always die. I even had some pretty isopods. :-( They also didn't take care of the crab feces as much as I expected them to. We haven't had them in several months and am debating ordering more before it gets too cold. Thoughts? Suggestions? I am tired of investing in something that I have heard other crabbers complain about overrunning their tanks.
2. The one thing that has been cohabitating very nicely is our minnow. I brought them half a dozen minnows and placed them in their FW. They ate all but 1. This one minnow has survived since June.. It's now late October. I'm getting tired of feeding the darn thing! I am not a fish person! Why do the crabs do this to me? ;-p
3. We have also been giving the crabs some slugs and snails to eat. They definitely enjoy it! But some of the slugs have been surviving for an extensive amount of time. Is it possible that they are successfully breeding in my tank? I'm watching Peaches pick one of the front of the glass right now. :-D
4. I have had issues with ants and mites both at different times. They literally swarm the morning after a feeding, one or the other. I can't put anything in the tank! So the crabs are living off of the small succulents I planted for them to feed on until I can figure out what to do. These bug infestations don't last long. They swarm and die out in maybe a week. The crabs spend the entire time hiding in a moss pit and then come down and eat once the bugs have gone. But it stresses me out and I know it gets to them too.
I have done everything that has been suggested and is feasible. Please don't resuggest things. Thank you in advance for wanting to be thorough, but seriously..
The one thing I have been deeply considering is some kind of.. ok.. *sigh* insect... *double sigh* ok.. spider.
spider.
uggggghhhh!
I know that Dakota from the Facebook group had a jumping spider in his tank to help with insects. I know a little about insects... Isopods, ants, mites, spring tails. But that's about where my knowledge ends.
Anyone know anything about spiders that would do well in a crabitat without over running it or harming my guys? Anything I'd be able to order online? Do you think it'd be ok to just toss in random spiders that I find say in the bathroom where I shriek like a little girl until my fiance comes in to save me....
God I hate spiders..
Any other bug suggestion would be appreciated.. unless it's something creapier than spiders...
