So I thought (think) that my E , "Harry" is dieing... Or molting...Ive had him for 3 months before he started acting wierd (I posted in emergencies) and at first thought he was dead( i cried).then I saw him move a little, more like a twitch, and thought he was surface molting.Well after doing research I decided to just be safe and assume it was a molt, since dead hermits and molting ones look simular.. This is my first hermit crab, I am so lost so I am really just hoping he's molting, but he has not moved(from what I can tell) since the 2nd (Tuesday)..There is NO alarming smell.just the usual hermit crab smell, nothing strong or nasty.his eyes are still bold black and ,besides being completely motionless, he looks okay..just a little grey. I refuse to put him to rest until I know for sure he is gone, any tips?
I leave him alone in ISO with the essentials and in the dark.i only check once a day for smell and to mist.
Sounds like a moult to me. Keep searching for a friend for him, nobody speaks his language, which is very frustrating. Even ignoring another is an active process, crabs need each other! Have lots of calcium sources ready for when he comes up (I have fresh egg shells, Sach has suggested baked beans too) Other then smell, there's no reliable way to tell before they die. Don't spray him directly, that'll upset him. You don't even have to pick him up to check on him daily, the smell is supposed to be unmistakeable. Leave him be as much as possible, apparently they know what to do!
4/1 - Stained crab is a boy! 1/5 - Got a 'sick crab' pack from Nat. I'm very impressed, it's a large pack so will feed all crabs! 30/6 - My new hygros have arrived! The big tank is 29degrees/81humidity. The little tank has the same temperature but 86humidity.
Yeah I have one over him with a dark rag over that to keep it dark.hes pretty big so I'm guessing this is going to take awhile
How are your crabs doing? Any update info to share?
Do have a bit of confusion maybe you could help clear up... your profile info states you have 5 PP; but your posting info ~ if I've understood it correctly, states you have 2 crabs: 1 EE & 1 PP...
My apologies if I'm forgetting some shared info regarding that discrepancy. Been reading EVERYTHING "here, there & everywhere" on SCP ~ so yah, maybe I've forgotten that I've already read about it? lol
Unfortunately Harry passed away:( Because I still had one PP I decided to Upgrade the tank and go ahead and just stick to PP's since I read that E's are exotic and I should have more experience with crabbing all together before I venture into exotics. I now have 5 all together, including the one that I had to accompany Harry. I will be posting pics soon, I have already named most of them except for 1 and besides the one I've had the whole time, they all are still in painted shells. I also have a thermometer and tons of other things so these little guys are happy:)

Awww, sorry to hear about Harry. *hugs*
There are just sooo much to learn about & do for these little critters for their proper care. I am definitely not interested in Exotic Crabs, they look great but I would worry to much. As it is, every time I change or add anything for the crabs my thought is "am I gonna kill 'em this time?" I am impressed by just how hardy PP crabs seem to be. Hopefully, with the re-do / setup changes to their Crabitat, mine are in their ideal environment now.
Am sooo looking forward to seeing your pics when you get to post those.
Well, due to a accident that happened a few years ago, I lost my sense of smell completely. I had been having my boyfriend smell for anything, he lives with me so he knows the regular smells. He insisted for a week that it wasn't "that bad", so I just couldn't bring myself to do anything..Then he had some friends over and they said it was a very very strong stench, so maybe he just got used to it.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
