I have two crabs molting and two crabs that aren't. While moving the wood around and cleaning the water dishes I uncovered one of the molters' by mistake he was moving around in the hole so I know he's ok. I ended up putting a heavy piece of coral on top of his hole so the other two crabs couldn't get at him. Should I do something else? I have heard mention while reading this website about using a coke bottle top. Since I don't know what stage he is in during his molt I'm weary about doing this plus we don't drink coke and I have no idea where I'd get one without wasting a bottle of coke. I'm kinda hoping he was either already done and I'll find him in the tank tomorrow, but in the mean time. Advice? Thoughts? Tips?
I hate this time of year everybody molts and it drives momma up the wall.

I've actually had this happen recently. It worries me though because you can put alot of stress on him. Keep in mind a heavy piece of coral could collapse his cave if he is molting and that can cause complictions. Did you see an exo? Is he pale and dull? Or is he his normal color? Also, it doesn't have to be a coke bottle is could be any soda bottle or even just a plastic cup.
When it happend to me I put him in my 10g iso tank and he was ready to go back within a couple of days, but every hermit crab is diffrent.
If he wasn't at such an awkward position I would have put the water dish over him instead. He was right by the leg of the climbing branch that sticks in to the substrata a good four inches. When the branch was accidently hit part of his hole collapsed. So I gently pulled the branch out and placed the coral over it. Like I said he was moving but he was very pale and I didn't see and pieces of exo in the hole. So I don't know if I should leave him or pull the coral off and check on him or place a water bottle over him? I'm probably over thinking and over worrying this. Can't help it though. Thanks guys
I did something so stupid it could only happen to me. The coral collapsed so I pulled it up dug out the hole a little bit(although this was pointless because the hole filled back up with sand)after done digging out the hole I dropped the spoon I was using in a random spot in the tank and guess what? I dropped the spoon exactly where my other molting crab was . So as of now I have two plastic bottles in my tank. Not to worried about the 2nd accidental molter I dug up because I only collapsed her tunnel not the hole she had formed to molt in.
Side note I found a hermit crab food that the boys love. JurassiDiet - EasiMix it's just snails and shrimp smells like low tide and has freaked me out twice cause I think its the dead crab smell but the two non molting crabs have been in the food dish gorging on this stuff. Wish me luck I might have a nervous break down before this molt is over.

That's why I brought that up, it something that happens, but if he wasnt in the middle of the molt he'll be fine, but for the other hermit crab just let him be. Keep in mind though alot of interaction stresses them out more than anything. If you keep your sand at a 'sand castle consistency' (able to make a sand castle with it) the hermit crabs will make stable tunnels and it won't fill in that easy.
For the JurassiDiet, I'm not too sure about that. Hopefully Sach knows more about it, but note that the label doesn't always say every single ingredient.
My advice as of right now would be to make sure heats at 80*F and the humidity is at 80% keep plenty of hardy foods and salt/fresh water; cover the tank an let them be for awhile other than food/water changes.
Good Luck, happy crabbing!

AT least they admit to using it but I can't believe how blatant they are at saying there are no known issues with it.
It's all about protecting their label to make money. I just thought it was interesting how they went about recognizing that question and addressing it. Overall, I stay away from any foods sold in pet stores labeled 'hermit crabs' and that's the best route to take. The hermit crab patch and Colorado Critter Co. both are reputable sources of hermit crab foods and I'd highly recommend both. Or even making your own mixes is a better idea!
I did just did much more in depth research on ethoxyquin and to be honest everything I've read doesn't seem to be too seriouse. Other than the fact that it can cause issues if you pet is continuessly fed it; day after day because ethoxyquin is allowed to be 30% more powerful in pet food than human foods.
One the other hand, copper sulfate is an inorganic compound that combines sulfur with copper. It can kill bacteria, algae, roots, plants, snails, and fungi. The toxicity of copper sulfate depends on the copper content, so thats definetely a no go!
Just to make it easier for anyone else reading this!

The stuff I have is canned food that I have to refrigerate after opening but the can still says discard after January 31. I try and feed my guys a variety of things. Truthfully and this is way gross I get them fresh horse manure once a month they also get feeder fish that the hermie hoard start eating as soon as it stops flopping around. I'll give them one more spoonful before I throw it out and that's just because they enjoyed it so much. Right now they have pineapple and carrots tomorrow is hard boiled egg and egg shell with a half of orange. Two molters haven't moved and I haven't touched the bottles I feel bad about uncovering them but I can't change what happen only can learn from it. I'll keep ya'll posted.
Oh update the first crab that I accidentally uncovered has moved the other two crabs pushed to water bottle top over. When I pulled them out of the crab hole I noticed the hole was empty. I shoved the water bottle back in the hole I was worried about him suffocating so I didn't fill the hole in. If I should let me know.
Little girl appeared today she is now about the size of a golf ball not so little anymore. She's the biggest in the habitat. I'll try and get a decent picture up hopefully. I tried putting one up early but the size of the photo made it impossible.
kitty: Not much activity in my tank. One morning I got up and it looked like a tornado went through it. Water bowls tumbled, food dishes upside down. Fixed it all up and have been waiting eversince. ! Nothing. DARN !!
