HOW MANY CRABS DO YOU HAVE,WHAT SIZES ARE THEY & HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THEM?-(I always say name something they are the size of like a grape, ping-pong ball, etc.)
3 crabs: Mover (large grape size), Groover (small grape size), and Speedy (ping-pong ball size). I bought Mover and Shaker about 18 months ago and Shaker died right away. Then we got Groover as a replacement from the store. Then we adopted Speedy off Craigslist about a year ago.
WHAT SPECIES OF CRABS DO YOU HAVE-(Self-explanatory) I think Speedy is a strawberry, and mover and Groover might be Aussies. Not sure though.
TANK # AND SIZE(S))- (ie: I have 2 tanks, 40 breeder & 55g-long) I have a 20 gallon long, and an ISO for Groover that is a small cooler.
LID TYPE-(ie: Glass, aquarium hood, etc) I didn't know I needed one so I'll get one today.
SUBSTRATE USED-(ie: I use playsand and Eco Earth in an approx 5:1 ratio) I have been using aquarium gravel for the past 1 and one-half years. I understand now that has been wrong! Will get the 5:1 mix going today, along with the other stuff I know I need.
SUBSTRATE DEPTH- About 1 inch of gravel, with a pile of calcium sand if they need it.
HUMIDITY SOURCE-(ie: Do you use a humidifier, mist daily, etc) I use a sponge and 2 bowls of water. When I bought my first 2 crabs, I had a humidifier going near the tank, and one of them (Shaker) died within a week or 2. So I got spooked about using it.
HEAT SOURCE-(ie: Under tank heater, heat bulb) Where are they located? No heater. I keep them in my master bathroom next to the bathtub where I see them every day and the children can look at them while bathing. I think the shower and bath might give them some extra humidity too. They are near a large window where the 1 inch blinds are closed but it is still like bright shade. At night it is dark in there and I can hear them being active.
WHAT IS YOUR TEMP/HUMIDITY ON AVERAGE?-(Please give averages for both day & night) I'd say on average it is about 78 degrees in there. The humidity I will check today.
HOW DO YOU TREAT YOUR WATER?-(ie: Tap water conditioner, name brand) I use the stuff we used in our Beta bowl in a bright yellow bottle. (Tetra fin?)
HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SALT WATER?-(ie: Do you use Oceanic or Instant Ocean-name the brand) I use All Living Things Soaking Salt.
WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR CRABS?-(If you feed other than fresh food, what is it called & where do you get it?) I give them a piece of fruit that we have in the house usually grapes, strawberries, pineapple, mandarin oranges, or sometimes lettuce. I also have 2 other bowls with food from PetSmart. One is called Variety Bites by HBH and the other Hermit Crab Food by All Living Things.
WHAT TYPES OF HIDES/CLIMBS DO YOU HAVE?-(ie: coco-hut, cholla wood, etc) I have 1 coconut hut, 1 plastic cave/hut, and one hollowed out 1/2 log. I have a long stick for climbing over, some pieces of coral, a rather large limestone rock.
DO YOU HAVE AN ISOLATION TANK?- Groover is in ISO now. It is a small Coleman cooler with a wet towel draped over the top for darkness and extra humidity. The fact that it is a cooler is not making it extra cold or hot in there. I checked.
HOW MANY EXTRA SHELLS AND WHAT SIZES DO YOU HAVE?-(Self-explanatory) I have 3 extra shells of varying shapes and sizes. They are all a bit larger than what they have now. About a year ago, Groover moved to a bigger shell. So now, in ISO, he has his and his old one in case he wants to size down after his shed.
DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM & ANY OTHER INFO YOU THINK APPLIES- As of right now, Groover is still not in his shell. He still looks healthy though, standing there looking at me. Last night, I tried to back him up into his shell because I was so worried but he ran away from me and fell out of the water bowl. I gently put him back in. He is a pale pink color and his eyes look black. I washed out both of his shells. When I thought he was dead and picked him up, there was still a string of goo attached to the exo, so it tugged a bit, but did not break. Maybe he is injured? Please tell me how to get him back in. I read about putting him in a drinking glass with his shell but I thought I'd wait for you first. Also, please tell me how to do the correct heat and humidity source. Thank you so much! I will try to get some pics posted today.
