Thought I would add a thread on food variety as it is a frequently asked question. I've spent over 2 years now trying to develop an easy way to feed so I am always offering variety and it's really pretty cheap to set up....here is my idea, hoping others will add theirs.
Dollar General store, $1 you get 3 narrow baskets....Walmart craft section near jewelry making is small craft bags that fit nicely into these baskets.
Then I ran off a copy of Sach's Safe Food list. Now to get variety go down the list and mark off things you may have already or that you can get out of the pantry....examles: Oatmeal, cornmeal, nuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, rice, beans (mine like them crushed, may want to try a hammer for this )
I took a permanent marker and wrote on the bag and put a small portion of these items in bags. Once my food was all in bags I divided them into sections:
Grains and nuts= nuts, sunflower seeds, beans
Fruits= raisins or other dried fruits which you can get in the hampster and bird section at the pet store.
Flowers= If you have access to flowers you can dry them by laying them out on paper towels (not in the sun or by any heat source)
Vegies= You can get a lot of dried vegies in the hampster section of pet store or on line.
Meats= Even though this is a protein like nuts, grains, and beans I have a separate basket and I keep dried crickets, mealworms, shrimp in this basket.
Now my feeding is simple, each night I take one or two (depending on how many crabs you have) little bags out of each basket. once I put some in the dish I move those bags to the back of the basket. So I never forget and they get the best variety by doing this. As you take more things off the food list and add into your baskets your variety will get better and you will notice the crabs eating better.
*when you buy food from HCP that have a little of everything in....I set these off to the side, I call them my quick foods, when I have a busy day, when I'm sick and they are usually good foods for when I go away for a few days.
