Today I decided to take out one of my hanging basket moss pits.
I hung 2 wicker baskets in my tank - one over the freshwater and one over the saltwater. Well, as I turned my saltwater pool into a nano-reef, I have to have constant water movement. The basket above the reef sits directly above the powerhead.
As a result, it is literally dripping wet. I'm talking soaking wet moss and the whole basket drips water all day long (back into the reef - doesn't bother the reef, just keeps it kinda dirty).
Well, as I was pulling shells out, I noticed a crab had molted in the moss. He's still a little pinkish and hasn't yet eaten much of his exo, so I put him in an ISO until he can harden up. I thought, "okay, one molt - that's weird, I never see crabs in this pit."
Which, is quite true. Ever since the addition of the powerhead and the fact that the pit stays completely soaked, I never see any crabs in it - EVER.
Well, with a little more digging through the pit, I can confirm no less than 6 different molts in this pit.
Now, the pit is not very deep - at most 1 inch. That is definitely NOT enough digging space to fully cover up the "molting smell". & yet, I've had at least 6 successful molts in this pit.
From the big pincher pieces I've found, I can say my E has molted twice, I've had 3 different PP molts (including the guy who is in ISO now) and one of my violas molted here.
I wonder if the fact that it is completely saturated with reef quality salt water has anything to do with the molts I'm having here. Thoughts?
Anybody else have confirmed moss pit molts?
