I've had my hermit crab for about three years now. For half of year one, she was completely alone, and then I got a smaller crab. But neither of them ever molted or changed shells. For year two, I bought two more crabs. When I introduced them into her tank, she changed to a larger shell. The smaller crab and two new ones died. Then I bought another one that was really tiny, but it too recently died. She has never molted, or showed the signs. But recently I've been so busy all I've had time to do is change her food and water and occasionally scoop out dirty sand. I know I've been a bad crab owner lately. But for the past few days I've noticed she has been sitting in the same spot/position. So thinking she was dead I panicked. When I picked her up, she appeared dead, but the fishy smell wasn't quite there. When I picked her up, it felt like she moved in her shell, but her legs were still awkwardly hanging out. Her eyes had an orange crust over them, so I thought she was diseased. But when I touched her big claw the hard outer skin moved, like it was coming off. When I did that, clicking sounds came from inside the shell. I've heard of surface molting crabs, but none of the pictures I've been able to find look like what she is experiencing, and none of them were in their shell. I put her back where I found her for the time being, but I'm really worried. How do I tell if she is sick or molting or what is wrong with her? If you have any suggestions or other questions about her please don't hesitate to email me because I don't know when I'll have acess to wifi next, but my email is mobile. Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully help my crab :)
